Ploegsteert Memorial
ploegsteert.jpg

The Ploegsteert Memorial stands 12.5 km south of Ypres on the road to Messines and Armentieres. It commemorates more than 11,000 soldiers, mainly British and South African, who died on this part of the front and many of whom remain unidentified. It served the area from Caestre-Dranaitre-Warneth to Haverskerque-Estaires-Fournes, and includes towns like Hazebrouck, Merville, Bailleul and Armentieres. Many who are commemorated here did not die in major offensives but in the deadly day to day attrition of trench warfare, or in small scale set engagements.

The picture appears by permission of the Commonwealth Graves Commission.
