Menin Gate Memorial Ypres
The Menin Gate Memorial - Photographs by permission of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
The Menin Gate Memorial is one of 4 memorials covering the Ypres salient. This site was chosen because of the number of men who had to pass through it on the way to battle. It commemorates casualties from across the Commonwealth. In the case of UK casualties they are usually those prior to 16th August 1916. The Ypres Menin Gate memorial now contains the names of more than 54000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927
