The name William Wilson displayed over the arch in this photograph shows that it was taken between 1889 and 1901, when he was the proprietor of the Inn.

These dates can be verified from the notes and information provided below by Andy Edwards of the Stokesley Local History Study Group; further details of sources he used can be found in the notes shown below.

Members may be interested to know that the symbol above the arch of the Golden Lion is the 'Winged Wheel', the emblem of The Cyclists’ Touring Club. The CTC is the first and oldest (cycle) touring club in the world and was founded in 1878.
